359. Matu-musi Temple / Jizou-san
Jizou-san (Jizou Bodhisattva statue) of Matu-musi Temple. A shot of the same statue was shown on this album long before. Today I carefully checked the stuff the Jizou-san holds.
Well, this is surely "shaku-jyou" (priest staff). Though I had once wondered if that was something like a sword, it can't be so. It is said that Jizou-san wandering over the provinces usually holds the shaku-jyou with 6 rings on its top.
The 6 rings of the staff is to represent the worlds of the endless cycle of the 6 posthumous worlds. At the same time, there is a practical reason in carrying the shaku-jyou.
Walking in the fields or mountains naturally brings about the possible encounters with the wild animals and vipers. Every step with the shaku-jyou making the sound, gasha--nn, can be an advance warning of something approaching. Thus both sides could reduce the risks of otherwise unnecessary encounters.

Visited Matu-musi Temple to see higan-bana.
It looks the prolonged hot weather made the blooming delay for 4 or 5 days.

356. Bayes' statistics

As this was an absorbing book in a while, I tried this shot.
Although Bayes' Staticstics is said to be indispensable to today's AI and the analysis of big data, it had been totally ignored until very recently by the scholars of statistics, since it was presented 200 years ago, corresponding to Kanpou and Enkyou eras in Japan.
While, in the area of military and insurance businesses, those who saw its effectiveness have kept to use it. Still there was no change in that it was completely neglected by the acadmic circles.
Now, however, it is said that the widespread use of computers has dramatically reversed the situation in a very short period of time, and today the theory is attracting a great deal of attention.
Though the title of the Japanese translation is as in the photo (Heterodox Statistics Bayes), that of the original book is as follows. Even if it looks too lengthy, the literal translation might make the book sell better.
The Theory That Would Not Die:
How Bayes' Rule Cracked the Enigma Code, Hunted Down Russian Submarines, and Emerged Triumphant from Two Centuries of Controversy
Author: Sharon Bertsch McGrzyne / Translator: Tominaga Hosi / Sousisha paperback series

355.@Wind 57.5 m/sec !! ??

Typhoon No. 15 landed on our area. At my station around half past five this morning, the roaring storm suddendly and completely stopped for about 20 minutes. It looks like our place was in the midst of the typhoon eye.
In nearby parks, large tree braches were so everywhere that it was not easy to walk around. A lot of acorns sitll fresh green were fallen on the ground as in the photo.
It is reported that the max. wind speed of 57.5 m/sec was observed at Chiba city. I wonder if that was true?
I had thought nearly 60 m/sec was the story for the ocean or islands like Okinawa.
Those who operate radios in the inland city area, even the most careful stations, are supposed to assume the max. wind speed of 40 m/sec.
If today's observed value is correct, it is better to consider also 55 m/sec, nearly 1.4 time the present figure. Thus the required strength for antenna mast for example is 2 times the present value. It is not very practical and I do not want to think of such situation, it looks that the weather has benn changing in such an unfortunate direction.

This shows the rain intensity of Kantou as of five o'clock this morning.
Borrowed from the screen of tenki.jp / Nihon Kishou Kyoukai.
Surely a hole is seen right above my station.

353.@O-tuki-san today

Passing more than 2 months after the summer solstice, it is already dark at half past six in the evening.
Today Sep. 5th corresponds to Aug. 7th in the old almanac and o-tuki-san looks like this.
The 15th night (for moon viewing) this year happens to be the 13th Friday, and the day of butu-metu (literally means buddha's death / unluckiest day).
Next week I have to find out the grass, susuki and hagi (for decoration for moon viewing).

351. Noises, vibrations? No problem!

Found a cicada shell clinging to the curbstone along a major street during the morning walk with Jiro.
Amazed by the fact that it emerged at the place where cars are running in immediate vicinity, I took this photo.
However, if I consider it hatched at a camphor tree of the side walk and lived in the underground for many years, the noises and vibrations of the trafic must be an ordinary affair for the cicada.
